Replica of the very first Swiss Army knife produced by Wenger since 1901
News published on : 17.09.2008
It is nothing else but the replica of one of the greatest legends of the Swiss master-cutlery that Wenger has just realized in its workshop. Manufactured by Wenger since 1901, the original knife was the very first example ordered by the Swiss Army. This model is considered the prototype for all subsequent versions of the multifunctional knife which would later become the world-famous Swiss Army knife. This limited edition of 1,893 units – 1893 being the year the Wenger master-cutlery was founded – is true to the original blueprints of that era in every aspect. Each individually numbered model comes complete with a copy of the technical drawings, which have been preserved for well over 100 years.
Delémont. The original blueprints, dated January 1891, bear the official stamp of the Swiss Federal Munitions Administration. These archive documents were used at that time, to manufacture the very first knife ordered by the Swiss Army for its soldiers. With these drawings, Wenger has preserved what might be considered the birth certificate of the famous Swiss Army knife’s great-grandfather. Some time ago, the decision was made in Delémont to create a replica of the first knife delivered by Wenger to the Swiss Army. The idea is to manufacture precisely 1,893 knives, 1893 being the year the Wenger master-cutlery was established.
This collector’s item is a model of Swiss quality, precision and craftsmanship. Each piece is assembled and adjusted manually by a master-cutler. The only differences from the original version are that the metal used is non-corroding stainless steel, and the cam is slightly rounder to make the mechanism easier to open. The scales are made of top quality vulcanized fiber; it was only later on that they were replaced by metal, emblazoned with the Swiss escutcheon, such as those on the contemporary model. The knife comes equipped with a blade, screwdriver, awl, and can opener. The historical interest of this model is unquestionable; it embodies the original version of a Swiss legend, which has been exported to all four corners of the globe, and even into space: the multifunctional pocketknife.
The whole set is contained in a display case made of wood and leather. The case itself is inspired by the trunks utilized by the army at that time; it can be opened and exhibited as is, or presented upright, which, with the help of hidden magnets, makes it possible to be displayed in its prop. Each individually numbered model comes complete with a certificate of authenticity, as well as a copy of the original drawings. The knives will be sold through the usual Wenger Brand distributors. The 1,893 pocketknives produced are intended for all Wenger customers, fans and collectors alike. Demand for this limited edition alree_scenic_Ambiance.tifady far exceeds the amount manufactured.
