WENGER SPECIAL COMMANDO 2008 - english

News published on : 22.04.2008

For over 100 years, WENGER has been the proud partner of the Swiss Armed Forces, supplying the multi-functional and highly reliable Swiss Army Knife to the troops.

Since 1997 WENGER Watch is the privileged partner of the Patrouille des Glaciers (PdG) and the SWISS RAID COMMANDO (SRC). Two international events, organized by the Swiss Armed Forces and which take place alternatively once every two years.

The WENGER SPECIAL COMMANDO series, is a tribute to the Swiss Raid Commando and the Patrouille des Glaciers. This generously equipped, 42mm quartz timepiece offers chronograph functions measuring 60 seconds, 30 minutes and 12 hours. The speed tachymeter is naturally also present, as is the date.

The WENGER SPECIAL COMMANDO is available in 3 color executions. Green and orange for the SRC variation and deep glacier blue for the PdG model. Green is the color of the Swiss infantry and orange is the color code used for commando task forces who specialize in stealth infiltration and acquisition of intelligence. Both SRC models bear the Swiss Raid Commando logo on the case back.

The deep glacier blue of the PdG model reflects the color of the ice in the Snow covered Swiss Alps in the evening, as it can be seen by the patrols, who race through the mountains during this grueling event. The PdG model bears the Patrouille des Glaciers logo on the case back.

During special operations, this multi-functional chronograph watch is an essential timekeeping tool, which delivers precise information such as, local time, date, elapsed mission time and thanks to its tachymeter, vehicle velocity. This data is acquired in one quick glance, due to the extra large 38.5 dial opening and the thick Superluminova covered color markers, numbers and hands for enhanced visibility in the dark. The black PVD coating on the 316L stainless steel case, pushers and crown, provide the antireflective, stealth feature required during special operations.

In order to provide maximum wrist comfort, durability and uncompromised resistance to all weather conditions and terrains the WENGER SPECIAL COMMANDO watch is fitted with a solid, supple black rubber strap.

Continuing the high tradition of quality synonymous with the Wenger timepiece collection, the WENGER SPECIAL COMMANDO features a scratch-proof crystal, PVD coated 316L stainless steel case, rubber strap, 100m water-resistance, as well as an international limited three year warranty.

In Switzerland, the WENGER SPECIAL COMMANDO is retailed at Swiss Francs 480.00.

SWISS RAID COMMANDO

The SWISS RAID COMMANDO is a difficult event, in which 160 teams compete. The SRC tests military skills in conditions that are as close as possible to real-life engagement.

It is difficult because it’s as close as you can get to a real commando operation. Participants confront opposing forces, the terrain and most certainly themselves.

It is difficult because it’s a competition, which involves teams from various forces and countries. By competing against other participants, commando teams can test their skills, strengths and weaknesses. The SRC requires, as in real operations, strong mental, physical, technical and tactical skills, over a continued period of three days.

The event is staged to give equal opportunity amongst the commando patrols, therefore guaranteeing the winners, are truly the ones who were the most efficiently able to combine technical performances, tactical skills, agility, dexterity, stamina, speed and intelligence.

Patrouille des Glaciers

The Patrouille des Glaciers is the most renowned and difficult high mountain race of them all. The teams (3 participants per team) race through the night, from Zermatt across the Swiss Alps to Verbier, over a distance of 55 km and a cumulated altitude variation of approximately 4000m. The best teams complete the course in less than 8 hours for a measured 110 km/effort!

The Swiss Army organizes this most extreme and certainly unique high mountain race. All civil and military mountain sportsmen are allowed to participate, however due to security reasons, the number of teams is limited to approx. 1’200, with an average of 3'600 athletes at the start.

The next edition will take place from 16th through 20th April 2008.
